True story: San Francisco, 1923. The naked body of a young rabbi is found brutally beaten in a Fillmore District flophouse. The teenaged perpetrator never stands trial. Based on shards of visual and archival evidence, The Disappearance of Alfred Lafee is a solo theatrical work—equal parts performed documentary, media-rich tableaux and speculative drama—that investigates the tragedy and its haunting impact down the generations. Even while unraveling a long-ago mystery, it raises poignant questions about how the past is recorded and erased… about who gets to be remembered, or forgotten.
I have performed excerpts of this work-in-progress at Monday Night Marsh in San Francisco and Tell It on Tuesday in Berkeley. If you'd like to stay apprised of upcoming presentations as I work my way down the weekdays, please use the contact form to send in your email address, or browse the calendar. |
